News for those taking Rantac for Acidity, Government has taken a big decision regarding 26 medicines



The Ministry of Health has removed antacid salt Ranitidine, popularly sold as Rantac Zantac, from the National List of Essential Medicines 2022 over cancer concerns.



Popular antacid Ranitidine is regularly used for heartburn in India. It is a gastrointestinal drug. However, all forms of Ranitidine: 150 mg tablet, oral liquid and injection have been in the revised version NLEM (National List of Essential Medicines)


According to the Vice-chairman of the committee that revised the NLEM 2022 list YK Gupta, the medicines banned by the regulator have been dropped from the essential medicines list. 


“Antinfectives such as Ivermectine, Meropenem, Cefuroxime, Amikacin, Bedaquiline, Delamanid, Itraconazole ABC Dolutegravir have been added to the NLM,” Gupta said. 

The Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya wrote on Twitter : “Released the National List of Essential Medicines 2022.It comprises 384 drugs across 27 categories.Several antibiotics, vaccines, anti-cancer drugs and many other important drugs will become more affordable & reduce patients' out-of-pocket expenditure.” 



34 drugs including some anti-infectives such as Ivermectin, Mupirocin and Nicotine Replacement Therapy, have been added to the NLEM 2022. With this addition, the total drugs under the NLEM rose to 384.

WHO issues alert on 4 India-made cough syrups over deaths in Gambia

WHO flags four India-made "contaminated" cough syrups potentially linked to the death of 66 children in The Gambia. The World Health Organisation on Wednesday flagged four "contaminated" and "substandard" cough syrups made by an Indian company, warning that they could be linked to the deaths of 66 children in the West African nation of The Gambia.   The medicines made by New Delhi-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited, which have been largely used for paediatric use, are believed to contain chemicals that are toxic and potentially fatal, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said. The WHO Medical Product Alert said the four products reported in September are Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup and Magrip N Cold Syrup, all manufactured by Maiden Pharmaceuticals Limited.
